Orrrrrr, it could be a slam against a particular female folk singer with whom he had been close, but broke up with. It's a love song, sorta kinda.

I think it was about how he used to think he was on top of the world and came to realize he never was anything special. It might be a song about eating humble pie...that type of thing.
