In an ideal world, pit bulls would be wonderful pets. In an ideal world people who defend pitt bulls would be right.

Unfortunately, in the world we live pitt bulls are generally bad pets. Not only are they physically capable of ripping your throat out, they are also in many cases bred to do just that. Sure, 95% of owners may treat their pitt bull like any other dog, but there is a frighteningly large group of owners that instill violence in their dogs.

For obvious reasons, this instillation of violence, and the breeding of it over and over again, leads to dogs that are born killers. How many times have you heard of a violent yellow lab tearing an intruder to shreds? That's right, never.

Lineage is VERY important when choosing a pet. This is why you should not get a dog from a shelter unless you've spent some time with it and are certain that it does not have violent tendencies. The best bet when looking for a dog, is to go to a reputable breeder (not some guy in a wife-beater with caged pitt bulls and a beer in his hand). Find out what the parents were like, SEE THEM, and then pick out a dog only after you've got a feeling for the temperament of the dog.

Pitt bull owners tend to irrationally defend all dogs of the breed. Ever wonder why police use powerful, aggressive breeds of dogs instead of beagles? It's not all for show.

Of course they should!

The problem with Pit Bulls is that they are a very common breed in the USA. And a common crossbreed as well. Even if a dog is even a quarter Pit Bull it automatically gets branded as one anyway.

Being so common, we hear many cases about them being violent and tempermental. Mean Pit Bulls make up a very low percent of those kept as pets. Think about it. A less common dog breed, even if it has a higher percentage of violence, still would not get anywhere near the negitive news coverage the pit Bull attracts.

It's on based on how they are raised.

Also, remember Petey on The Little Rascals? Yea, that was a Pit Bull. No one during that time period was freaking out about how they were man eaters.

It all depends on what a breeder is breeding for; some not so nice people have breed for aggression. These dogs are used for fighting or as guard dogs. If breed by a reliable breeder one can get a great dog. That goes for all breeds, not just pit bulls. I personally grew up with three pit bulls. They were all very sweet dogs. One of them had come from a shelter; she had been taken there after it was found that her previous owner liked to beat her. She was distrustful of men, but once she got to know you she was very loving.

Pit bulls are some of the sweetest loving dogs I have been around. They would be a lap dog if you let them. But when this poor dog was placed in the wrong hands they put a stereo type on them and have ruined the animals name. Yes, pit bulls can be house dogs, it just depends on how you raise them.

I don't see why not.The myth that all pit bulls are "bad" or mean is so hypocritical!Any animal can be "made" to be mean.Pit bulls in paticular have gotten a bad rap though, mainly because some ignorant peeople want to make them fighting killers.I used to have an albino pit and she was the sweetest dog .I never treated her bad and I got her as a puppy. Now if you get one who's already been "ruined" then no I wouldn't have it in the house.ALANNA

my pit bull is a house pet. She behaves very well. She just gets excited when somebody comes in the door, but not in a mean way. They make great pets if treated properly.

Of course they should. If you do your research you will find that there are other types of dogs that top the charts for violent behaviors. I have a pit and love him to death. He loves everything and everyone. Very friendly.

I would strongly suggest that anyone getting a pitt is from a loving home and knows how to take care of dogs. Its the people who chain them up or leave them in a box 24/7 that make them mean and violent.

If properly trained and loved, pit bulls are great pets. Some of the nicest dogs I have seen are pitbulls.

It's a shame Pitts have got such a bad rap, it's not the dogs fault, it's the irresponsible owners. I love them and they're so cute, but as a result of bad breeding also very unpredictable. I think with responsible owners, yes.

Of course. I know tons of people with pitbulls as pets. They're sweet darling, well trained dogs.

Of course, these people are also not complete idiot morons who leave the dogs alone with their babies or chain them out in the yard and ignore them. Maybe idiots should be banned from having pets. Everyone would benefit.
