That's awfully specific. It depends on what they're into, if the 17 year old in question likes music: get them an I-tunes card or a cd of their favorite band. Anything they can choose to buy themselves is an excellent idea, gift cards are a really good idea.
Don't get anything cheesy, either. (Like 17 magazine, "oooh you're 17, you get 17!" Lame!) Or underwear, socks or condoms. Not good gifts!

Just give them gift certificates or cash. I'm seventeen myself, and though I always appreciate gifts, it's really frustrating when people get you something that you will never use. Plus, it's a lot easier for you- just find a store that they shop at. :)
