I read it (and write a little). Mainly Anne McCaffrey's Pern, but also Babylon 5, The Magnificent Seven, and some "Emergency!"
Truly good fanfic writers are rare (and it's even rarer, but not unheard of, for them to be tapped as canon writers). Too much of the genre is just characters having sex, or horribly cliched soap opera plots (see references to Mary/Wesley Sue).
However, in an era where a great many people don't read for pleasure, and the use of 'u' for 'you' has become ubiquitous, I applaud *all* of the writers of fanfic, good and bad. Even if you're resorting to the use of a world and characterizations that are not your own, you are still working on communication and writing skills. In my opinion, that should always be encouraged.

I read fan fiction a lot. Contrary to popular belief some of the stuff on then et are very good. And it explors characters and detail which the original never did. There are many fandoms around and I read a lot. You should try Sherlock Holmes fan fics. (anyway, what you call fan fics are books of the series which couldn't get published.) If they get published it becomes a part of the series. I mean, so many ppl write Star trek and when it becomes published no one calls it fan fic but I'm sure more of theses authors got hooked by reading the originals and working on an idea just like fan fic authors do

I enjoy reading fan fiction, only because it's very interesting to see what other people think will/could happen within a story. I don't like to write it, because I believe it's never as good as the original. But, I do like to see what's inside other people's minds. I'm a nerd and like to read Harry Potter fan fiction. *lol*

Yes I do. Quite a bit actually. If you're not careful it can become quite an addiction. I read Harry Potter fan fiction. The most common site (for a bunch of different things, not just HP) is fanfiction.net. I tend to read the...ahem..racier ones. Adult Fan Fiction. No it is not illegal, No it is not on a porn site, they can just be more graphic and have a higher rating. If you would like to know the more adult sites leave me a lttle note on your question and I'll be happy to tell you. I think it's pretty damn cool if you ask me.

I read it extensively, I write it extensively.
My most prevalent fandoms (for reading and writing) are, in order:
SAMURAI 7
DRAGONBALL Z
KIDDY GRADE
VAMPIRE HUNTER D
DRAGONLANCE
Considering that, in the strictest sense, all of the STAR WARS, STAR TREK, BABYLON 5, and other novels are 'fan fiction' (just by better-known authors), why not write it, and why not read it? In some instances, it's even been accepted as 'canon'. I figure, if you enjoy it, read it.

I love fanfiction, at least well written fanfiction. There is a lot of trash out there. I read fanfiction in two fandoms: BtVS and Highlander.
There are some writers/creators that are flattered by fanfiction. They think it's great that the fans are keeping the show alive through fanfiction. (Joss Whedon being one)

I never read fan fiction, because it is never as good as the original. The original author is not there. Also, it spoils the original, because the story could never have gone on after the ending that its author gave it. Fan fiction says that the writer cannot create an original work of her own. So she indulges her fantasies about another's work and characters, then foists it on us.
