+ Free C,
It may seem cruel to you to kill horses, but nature is a cruel place and if all animals and plants for that matter serve a purpose then what purpose do horses serve? They may be on earth to keep hay from growing too high, or in your case they may be here to make Free C smile. What would be more cruel? Forcing you(via a tax system) to pay for an injured animal for the rest of its life(in which case someone might be not able to have clothes, food, home, schooling etc.) or?, setting it free in the wilderness to have a slow death being eaten by a predator? or perhaps you can come up with some alternative reasons that might be appropriate and useful along with a faster and less pain-full death than a slow loss of mobility, or being slowly killed and eaten by predators like wolves or the like. Now the ball is in your court Free C. please come up with an alternative and perhaps phrase it as a question that we could all vote on. Who knows you may get it to happen someday.

Sad but true, some perfectly good horses get sold to buyers and end up in slaughter auctions. Its usually the healthy fat horses that get slaughtered because the buyers get paid by the amount of pounds the horse is in fat and muscle. The horses that end up in auction that are old or hurt usually get trampled and killed before they even make it to the auction. AGAIN...most horse owners dont sell their horses to slaughter. The horses get passed down the line and somehow end up in the hands of a buyer.

However, they have passed the petition and as of December 15, 2006 the slaughter of horses is 100% banned in the U.S.

There are some cons to this though. Horses will start being shipped over sea's to Europe where horse meat is popular, causing even more pain and suffering of the horses.

If you've ever been to a slaughter auction or a slaughter house, you'd know how horrible it is. You can even sense death when you walk in. I am 16 years old and tracked this horse from a camp to a slaughter auction in loup city. When he was brought out in the ring they were usign cattle prongs on him to try to keep him in shape (he was bucking, rearing, kicking, biting etc.) I finally got him for 500 Dollars. Long story short, he is the best horse i have ever, and could ever have.

I hope this info helped you out!

Putting them down IS killing them when they are sick or hurt. And it's not like they have their head cut off while they're alive, it's either by injection or a more crude way is a single shot in the head. And when they are sick or hurt, this is the least painful thing. Anyone who has a horse would do anything to save it. But there comes a point with all animals that nothing can cure them. So you can either let them eb tortured to death with their pain while they are trying to figure out what in the world is going on, or you can very quickly put them out of their misery. You should be a vet and work on finding cures for sick and aging animals. You would make millions because people absolutely love their pets.

I am now not towards the slaughter of horses, I am towards the businesses that lift animals who haven't any different alternative. Many slaughter residence animals are "historical" monitor horses (in fact, they're almost always particularly younger), displaced feral and wild horses, and older animals who're not desired as "pets". I possess a couple of retired Standardbred horses who I bought at public sale. They promote for low cost. And the individuals I probably bid towards are almost always slaughterers. The animas nevertheless almost always come from those disciplines in dangerous form. They're distrusting, they are lacking gates that pleasue horses are anticipated to have, they is also susceptible or have accidents, all forms of matters. And truthfully, routinely it quite is extra humane for them to simply depart this global than to are living a lifestyles lame and afraid. There arn't sufficient individuals inclined to take them in. Or people who have the time to commit to the undertaking. I'm now not towards racing. I'm simply towards a few... Methods utilized by targeted members that depart the animals wholly damaged. But... On a facet be aware. Some individuals love cows. And they slaughter the ones. We quite can not decide upon and select. Just within the West horse is not whatever we see on our menus, however it is very usual in Asia and Europe.

Well you will be happy to learn that congress has passed it now, that it is illegal to transport, sell, or trade horses intended for slaughter, but they have yet to shut down the factories, so it still happens. I think it is very sad and cruel that people cannot care for their horses once they are past their 'fun' stage of life. I have a 28 year old horse who is past his 'fun' stage, but I do not plan on selling him, but they are very, very expensive to maintain at that age because they need expensive senior feeds, and mashes, along with good hay. Unfortuneately, Americans overbreed their horses and there are not the funds, homes, or people willing to care for the overpopulation of horses. believe it or not, most horses are quarter horses that did not make it at a sale so the owners let them go cheap to slaughters, to make room for the new crop of foals coming in. lots of them are also thoroughbreds, also sold for the same reason as the QH's. It is cruel, but it is better than having them starve to death in a field with thousands of other horses. The simple solution is to stop breeding horses for awhile, or seriously cut back. I believe the major racing businesses should be told to cut back on breeding, and focus more on quality not quanity.

As A Horse Trainer sometimes its the only way for some horses ,Some horses are naturally nasty (like some pit bulls)The average horse weighs around 500 kg which are not suitable for general public. i bet you would hate to see one of these horses kill someone ;-(. As well breeding has evolutionised the racehorse to the point where their leg are very thin(imagine 500 to 600 kg on bones half the size of one of your legs so when they break they cant be supported so putting them down is the only humane way.

i feel the same way , but unfortunately its the nature of the beast, it has been a quick result of mankind in general ever since the first teaming up of horse and rider. some people depend on their horses for their livelihood, and if a horse is lame and unridable then the easiest way to solve that problem(and i use that term lightly) is to be rid of it. its not right but back in history, and sometimes now a days most can't afford to maintain and feed a horse that they supposedly can't enjoy.
I'm like you in a sense that i think its sad that they do this, i have always wanted one love riding them, but i would settle to just have one for a companion.

there are alot out there as well who are in fact heartless enough to the point that they don't see the animal. they see the dollars they can get from them as well.

Eating horses is SICK. But slaughtering them isn't, when they're hurt, because than they won't feel the pain anymore, which is kind of asking: Would you rather live and be tortured or Just Die? I bet you only like horses because they look cool, if it was a frog, you wouldn't care, trust me.

I feel the same way about this. Horse slaughter is wrong and I hate it. But people don't want to pay to have their old horses or horses they dont need/want anymore put down and have to dig the huge hole for them to be laid to rest. Its not respectable for these animals. Someone once said, "History was written on the back of a horse" and this is how us Americans treat them? Because no one wants them and they sell them to a slaughter house for a quick buck. It saddens me. Supposedly horse slaughter has been stopped in the US but I'm not sure if it has or not. Hopefully people will wake up and realize that its terrible and stand up for them.

i agree horses are beautiful beasts but I dont see how letting them endure months and moths of pain to try and mend a break would be anything other than cruel. I do feel for horses because quite frankly one leg injury and they are as good as gone.
