I am a male sales rep that has been with my company for over 4 years. Recently, we hired a female rep with no sales experience and is very wet behind the ears. She has a relative that is a financial planner and has asked me to sit with them. I politely declined and now she gives me nothing but attitude. She is very brazen with me and a few other co-workers and is not very respectful. Upper management loves her because she is a young, attractive woman in a predominantly male office. I have not approached management about her behavior yet, but I'm getting close. I'm just afraid of losing the "political game" due to the fact she is a woman. I've been professional, answered her questions, taken her on sales calls, given her materials to succeed in sales. I just don't understand the hostility and I don't know what to do. I'm also afraid of losing my job if I approach management about her. What should I do?

Keep a daily log of your interactions with this person. Try not to be bias or judgmental in your log, just state the facts. Do not come to loggerheads with this person. Do not try to Roundup the other employees. Do your best to stay neutral and keep the log, that is your best defense. When everything hits the fan this log may help you keep your job or stay off a lawsuit. Be very careful of what you say to this lady to be sure that you are not being sexist. Stick to business topics only. You've had this job for four years, just keep up your sales. A top closer is very seldom messed with.

She won't last. They never do. Just avoid her, let your boss know in a mature way that you think she's a weirdo. Then, after a few more weirdos that your company hires and regrets and lets go, all of whom you mention early on as potential problems, more seriously discuss this with your boss. Point out to him that you "called" everyone of the last four or five people who didn't make it. Get my point? Bide your time doing your own job with grace and ease. You DON'T have to be nice to this person. She's not the type who would do any good with the kindness of colleagues. She will use your every weakness. Stay bone dry neutral and formal with her. Don't let her know anything about you. You don't have to be her friend. Don't try to engage with her or help her beyond the minimum. Find ways to never see the wench. That advice is for males in your situation. For a female, I would suggest a more frontal approach, including holding her head in a toilet for a while just to get ones true feelings for her across in a meaningful way. P.S. If your company keeps hiring the wrong kind of people, trust me, you need to start looking for work somewhere else. That means management isn't worth the ink their mail-order M.B.A.'s are printed with and that you and your reputation and your career are in constant danger of poor management from morons.

If you're worried about being fired over going to management then maybe there is something a little more serious going on in that workplace. Unfortunately, we can't all go to work and love the people we work with. Sometimes personalities clash and there is nothing you can do about it. Remember to stay focused on your job and keep producing. Don't give a reason to be fired and you probably won't be. If this girl's attitude is as poor as you say it is, it will eventually hurt her production. If the problem is really that bad, then make sure you go through the right channels to do something about it. I would start with Human Resources and go from there. Good Luck!

next time she gives you attitude use the "I" statement. When you say "x" I feel "x", therefore in the future I'd prefer you "x". If that doesn't work - talk to your supervisor. Choose your words carefully - don't make it seem like a gender thing. Let him or her know that you've tried everything you know, you've even expressed to her how you feel, and that she still insists on treating you the way she does. What you don't want is a hostile work environment - so again choose your words wisely.
