Brick and mortar made up the majority of the building's construction. Since the workers used more mortar than brick, this caused weak walls. To make matters work, the bricklayers did not let the mortar dry before adding the next layer of bricks.

The effect was such that when the dome was placed on top of the walls, they actually leaned outwards due to the massive weight of the dome.

Bricks, marble, motar, granite -- your typical building materials. Some of the mosaics ware made of gold leaf on glass squares.
