Read the newspaper. The paper is more current than books and you can get quick facts about lots of issues. Once you find something that interests you you can read a book on it. If you do want to read a book I would recommend my Human Geography textbook. Yes it is an actual textbook but it is very informative and is easy to understand. It is called Human Geography: a cultural landscape by John Rubenstein. It talks in depth about current issues that you only get tidbits of when you watch the news.

That is such a broad question. I suggest you take some classes on Government at a community college or go to the library and find books on our constitution, government and maybe read some autobiographys on some of our founding fathers like George Washington or Abraham Lincoln. There are so many things to learn not one book or not a few books are going to do it. So, just go and read what interests you. If it isn't interesting you won't read it. So, go to the librery and get to know the librarian and tell them what you want to know, what you want to take on first and they will help you. They are very knowledgable about these things. good luck learning. Read for fun too. Read Angela's Ashes, The Diary of Anne Franke, To Kill a Moking Bird, How Green was My Valley...on and on. Have fun.
