When he was shot at last year's season finale, he didn't fully recover from the surgery. He was having tremors in his hand and still performing life-threatening surgeries. She was helping him in the operatng room by completing surgeries that he couldn't complete and covering him for him by making sure she was scheduled with him. The truth came out this season though.
