Things mean whatever meaning we give them. To some, Christmas is a solemn religious tradition. To others, it's an annual event where you get drunk at office parties and spend way too much money on gifts. I think most people have a very complex relationship with Christmas.

For me it's pretty much a traditional winter festival with feasting and gifts, some bad pop music, and lots of lights. I didn't grow up in a religious family.

Didn't the christians, when trying to get more people to convert, try to associate christian symbols and themes with more pagan events? If some non-christians have a big celebration in december, why not rearrange christian traditions so that jesus's birthday falls on the same day?
So.
Some people: Pagan stuff
Christians: Jesus
My answer: international capitalism field day

In our culture it is about the giving and receiving of goods. IT is a central point of our econonomy and is very much like the practices of the New Guinee tribes who have the same festivals that drive there culture and economy. They of course have a differant God as the catalist.
If you say its about Jesus well thats a nice little thought but it is not the reality of our actions.

Its about money. Nothing else.

Last time I checked, there was no Santa in the bible. I'm not really sure where the concept of presents comes from.
