Perhaps it was only an advert - but it's an interesting question. Some of the TV special effects are so realistic that they likely could create a world-wide panic, instead of simply a continent-wide pandemonium. And given the state of mind people are in after 9/11, it likely wouldn't take a whole lot to convince people that the world truly was coming to an end.

Back in the time that Orson Wells did his "war of the worlds" broadcast, the word credibility was a looser topic than today.
Today, we can't just assume that something is real even if it on television unless someone credible has backed it up. Back then, anything that was on the radio was considered credible. People were more innocent back then, and they had a greater respect for authority. Since it was on the radio back then, people thought it was true because no one in the radio business was unethical liars.

TV can make an entire nation go mentally numb by staring at useless nonsense hour after hour after hour...it has become the electronic babysitter and "drug of choice" to avoid reality. No one talks/comminucates (properly) anymore. Families don't spend quality time together. Children don't go out and play in the fresh air and sunshine anymore. Everyone is hypnotized and addicted to the TV....life as we once knew it is over...some TV is okay, especially the educational stuff, but using it for entertainment/killing time/something to do, instead of using that valuable time for something constructive is a waste of valuable time that we have very little of anymore.....

TV can make it go to war, can create mind and behaviour patterns, in short, it can control a nation even better than Big Brother didi it in Orwell's 1984

that was then , this is now.
nothing.
with all the special effects in the movies, no one will blink an eye.
if something really happens, everyone will think that it is a hoaxs.
even now some people still believe that the moon landing was a big hoax.
in those days people really believed in radio announcements.
God bless,
gabe

TV can make people afraid. So afraid that they will support an invasion of a country that had nothing to do with anything.
It can make people so afraid that they willingly give up their civil rights for the pretense of safety and security.
The tube can make your fear so real that you support torturing other human beings to death.

make people think they can sing because they show up to a talent show and get selected just so they can help raise ratings.
