I'm not too familiar with how girls function so... i'm really curious how this works, i know teenage and those hormonal changes in the body cause some shift in the moods etc, but my question is where do you draw the line? Heavy moodswings, at least one per day, are these normal for a 18 year old female? Is it one of those "teen" things? (If when she got her first period makes any difference, she's had it for 7 years)
If normal, then when do they stop if ever?

Alright i don't think i've made this clear, she's not like this only around her period time, she has moodswings all the time, period or not.

I think it all depends on the person. Remember us girls are going through a 30 day cycle..its not just a once a week period. I'm an emotional person with or without a menstral cycle. I think at different times of the month I am the moodiest than other times. It is very normal for any woman to be moody..I sometimes think some women can take it over the edge, but than again each woman is different and experiences different types of pain and stress. I know that during my period Im extrememly tense, annoyed, and in tons of pain. Those who dont understand or except it pretty much piss me off more than those who show sympathy. It probably will never stop..if she is experiencing tons of pain and discomfort have her look into birth control methods..this can help with some times during the month. Good luck and just remember to be there for her and thank god you are not going through it..bc its sucks, but its part of life.

normal for anyone getting their period. this can occur during ovulation about 5 days to a week before your period. its a sign of PMS. it occurs because of a change in hormones. perfectly normal. not harmful physically, can bug others emotionally. make sure she knows what can happen when your get mad at someone.
