I am a muslim Girl, and i often think to myself, why is that some girls think it is obligatory to wear hijab, but others think it's not? i don't think it is because the quran specifically says

"Hide your beuty and cover your bosoms with under garments, except in front of your husband"

But nowhere NOWHERE in the quran does it SPECIFICALLY say
"cover your HAIR, or HEAD"

So i guess my question is, what do you think? Is it still neccesary, and why is it that some women don't wear it?

Mohammed would not have seen the hajab or burka on any of his wifes, certainly not the 40 year old widow who was higher status than him.

So if the prophet would not have endured these devices, what does the phrase hide your beauty really mean?
I think he means you should not flirt or smile seductiviy at men, hiding your expression of your beauty for your husband.

So the interpritation of the quran is the reason why some people legitiamately don't wear it.

I am a Muslim woman that does wear hijab. First, the Quran tells us that we also must go by the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad (saw) which is hadiths. So if you fail to do so then you fail to do what Allah has asked of you as a Muslim. Second, the Qurans does speak of the hijab. It does not use the term hijab bc this is a more new word but it does use the term cloak which if you look up used to be the word that people described the new name hijab. And last of all, hijab is a personal choice of a woman. If she chooses to do it then alhumdullah and no person should bash her for that and ESPECIALLY not her own Muslim brothers and sisters, astagfurAllah. I thank God every day that I am modest woman and that I am not forced my society to wear clothes that show off my body to anyone. ALHUMDULLAH. Women think they have to wear what is in magazines and they have to show off skin these days, even young girls do this now. This is what society wants women to think they are free? I think not they are a slave to these things and I am not. I dress how I want and my body is for my husband not any man who I do not even know. My hijab protects me bc trust me I get a lot less looks and attention then if I did not wear it. May Allah guide you..

many women find that if they do things like wear a hijib then their future husband will look more into their personality than their looks. This is coming from a straight women with short hair, men are just as attracted to length and look of hair as they are to butts. But anyway, some wear them for that reason others wear it because it was a custom in their family, their mothers wear them an all other women who are related. Some women think that it is oppressive, so they speak out against wearing them, while others recognize it as a tradition so they respect these women's decisions. So even though it is odd to people who don't wear them we need to show respect and not force our beliefs on others. If a woman lives in the US today she definitely has the choice to wear one or not.

I think modesty is the key here. I know many muslim women who do not wear a head covering, and they are respected members of society. In the end its a personal choice.

Everything about a women is made sexual, If she does not cover men are aroused, now tell me who is having a problem, men or women, why blame the women and cover them from head to toe? Women take the blame always and complain. Even if she is covered do you think men dont thing about sex, statistics say a man thinks of sex every 3 minutes, he has no blood in the body he has sex harmones circulating,
Women who thing like me surely will not wear....just say guys you have a problem to deal with not me! People in Africa are walking naked and are happy, living in harmony, will they go to hell just because of this, instead of spending your good time on the dress code think of evolving yourself and be a good person. It will take you very far ahead, it is important to question things for yourself and express your true self and tht is where lies God, within us.
People follow all these things to be accepted in society or community, it takes a lot of courage to be different and believe and do what you think is right.

I think it's how you interpret it, really. And it is a choice. I live in a Muslim country and many women do not cover. There is no pressure either way. Do what you are comfortable with.

Assalamu Alaikum, how r u doin? I'm muslim too and I wuz jus answerin to let u kno you ARE supposed to cover your body and your hair. That ayat that you mentioned: "Hide your beauty and cover your bosoms with undergarments except in front of your husband", DOES apply to your hair. Your hair is a part of your beauty. See, like if u wuz bald-headed a man mite not b attracted to u. (Actually, some men like bald headed women, I'm jus tryin to give an example.) Usually boys like girls with long hair tho and your hair is a factor of attraction. Just like your figure, your hair can attract a boy. The reason we cover is to avoid attracting men to us in such a manner that will cause things to happen that shouldn't. I mean, I kno for some people that may be hard, but the purpose is to have modesty and gain respect. I cover, and as for the "personal choice" factor, to me- that's just bull. I mean, I'm sorry to put it like that but it is. I don't have a problem wit muslim gurls that don't cover- I have friends that don't and I still respect them. Its one thing if you choose not to cover and know that its just you. If you don't feel you can handle it, that's fine, MashaAllah. But its a whole 'notha thing fa u to claim that its a "personal choice" and its not obligatory to wear the hijab, because when you say that, you are making a statement to all those people who don't know anything about this matter and they continue to assume that your statement was correct, when in truth, it was not. Now, Im not tryin to offend u if u think that or nuthin- (it don't seem like u do tho) but I'm jus tellin it like it is. Those girls that DO claim that, even know themselves that its not true because they always talkin bout some I'll cover when I'm ready, and if it was a personal choice, you wouldn't have to EVER be ready because its YOUR choice. So, newayz
That's my opinion on things, well actually thats the truth. I would say more but I have to go now. If you have anymore questions or concerns you can contact me by email on the site. Hope I helped you in some way.

Assalamu Alaikum,
Love, Your Muslim Sister In Islam, Njeri (In-Jerry; incase u were wonderin, which u probably were. lol)

May be as Quran says "hide your beauty!, some muslims thought that hair is beautiful, so they decide to hide it.
Even, you know that among arab countries that things are different from one country to another.
See poor afghan women!!!! they watch the world through the veil with little holes.....but in Lebanon, many muslim women dont use the muslim dresses.
Even in Egypt, so much young women dont use anything in the head now..some of them, wear pants in the streets also.
I dont know why it happens that way...........but i think that to be a good muslim is not necessary to wear that.

Because in various cultures, someone in charge comes up with these ideas that make absolutely NO SENSE, but everyone does them because their leaders said to do them.

A good example is Nazi Germany. Women were told to produce only white, blue eyed, blonde haired children. How? It was recommended, and done by many women, to conceive children in the grave yards of nordic people. Nonsence, but leadership said it, people followed it. So someone in charge came up with the idea, cover your head and hair; no reason necessary, because someone in charge said-so, and along comes the rule, or law, which ever you prefer.
