I don't know about gifted program, but it sounds like honors. AP is "advanced placement", it doesn't have and requirements, but good academic skills and high grades are usually expected. AP is basically taking higher level, and some college level classes in high school. At the end of an AP class, you have the option to take the AP exam. If you score well on that, most colleges will give you credit for that class and you can be exempt in college. This is good for you in college, you will be ahead of your peers when you enter and you may be totally exempt from a subject all together. For example, if your college requires you take on lab science and your major doesn't require any additional sciences (such as a business or art major) and you score well on the biology or chemistry AP exam, you won't have to take a science class in college and can take an elective during those hours. It also helps you get admitted to college because they know those classes are more rigorous than general classes.

The gifted program and AP (advanced placement) are programs for students who excel in certain areas, or maybe all areas. They are designed for students who finish their lessons much faster and score higher than their peers and need a curriculum which challenges them more than the regular curriculum.

I'm not sure about the requirements because they are different in different states, and possibly even for different school systems. The advantages are a better education which prepares you for college courses. Students who are part of these programs generally get more scholarship money than students who do not.

I would try it! What can it hurt?
