For 800 bucks hopefully it comes with a monitor you would have a decent system. You are going in the right direction as far as a name brand. Two things to think about. First is support if you are not computer savvy, I suggest you get a dell and purchase the customer support option. Eventually you will need support. If your buddy is your support then you can buy any system. Second. If you want compatibility with MS word, IE7 and PC games then make sure you have Windows XP as your OS. There are some products from best buy and frys electronics that are bundled with Linux to hold down the cost. Try to get a windows XP bundle with the actual disc with the product. Oh yeah stick with name brands. Happy Hunting.

On that budget I go with a mac mini. Its just the computer so you would have to buy the mouse..keyboard...and moniter sperate or use existing hardware (if compatable...DVI connections and USB 1 or 2) so much friendlier than a pc...do yourself a huge favor and switch...youll never look back. Apple has award winning support, they also have microsoft office for mac os x...not to mention a great web browser (safari) music (they did make itunes and the ipod) and apps like iphoto and imovie. Sorry if it sounds like im preaching or making a sales pitch but I used to be a PC person for many years grew up learning DOS until college...never looked back since. They are just too easy to use and they are beautiful. Not as many options in terms of gaming but all the creative professionals always work on a mac.

First, whatever you do, don't go with Dell, or you might as well jump into quicksand. Second, consider what you know about computers and think about building one, it's easy, cheaper, and you'll get a lot more out of your computer. Third, if you don't want to build your own try Tigerdirect.com or Newegg.com, great places with even better prices, and the tech support blows Dell onto dry land (in other words, you're not talking to someone reading off a paper in India).
Hope this helps, let me know if you decide to build, I've got a tons of tips and tricks.

Go with DELL , their longevity thus far in the computer world only stands to prove a HUGE point! Please take note of their Mega market share, how many people do you know that have DELL ?
Hp is a good system but have you ever tried to work on one? Totally proprietary systems.
DUDE! GO WITH DELL!!!!

As far as MS word? Use openoffice.org instead. It's free and you can open and save to Microsoft format.
