Handedness is determined while still in the womb. There is no known reason why, a fetus chooses one hand over the other, but whichever hand they use to suck their thumbs for the first time, that is what they'll be during their life.

My anatomy teacher tried to explain this to my class recently.

Alot of lefties had a twin at one point--an identical twin, that died early in the pregnancy and either dissolved or was "eaten" by the other baby (yes...eaten). These babies were, at one point, mirror images of each other, like putting your hands together, they playing them out, putting the pinkies away from each other. That sort of mirror image.

There is no other difference in the genetic make-up, as far as I know, that distinguished a lefty from a righty.

I don't know if I was supposed to even be a lefty, as it usually skips a generation. Yet, my mum, myself and my daughter, 3 generations of females in a row, are all left handed! My mum's grandmum on her mums side was a lefty as well.

a person is usually a lefty because that is how they are raised. If you teach your child to be a lefty, he or she will become a lefty. Most parents teach kids with their right hands because it is a common belief that lefties are seen as evil (as in Islam, muslims must do the vast majority of their actions with their right hands).

Brain hemisphere dominance. A right handed is left hemisphere dominant while a lefty is a right hemisphere dominant.
