I have a three week old daughter who wakes up from her sleep with a startle and screams the house down. She will then scream until she burps or spews (takes a loonnng time). She screams after she has her bottle, even if she has had a good burp. I've tried warm baths, holding her in different positions, cycling her legs, putting warm wraps on her belly, etc but nothing seems to help with the belly-aches. How can I help her?

If she is spitting up alot, then she might have acid reflux. Thats what my son has. Its fairly common. It causes upset stomache, like having ulcers, but not as bad. Waking up startled, screaming the "house down." That sounds like night terrors. Alot of children suffer from that too. My baby gets one from time to time. Some children have it pretty bad. Its strange to think that a babies can have nightmares with so little life experience. I would look it up.

Good Luck

This is completely normal. As well as providing nutrition, suckling provides comfort, something an infant needs after being thrown into the big wide world! It's not a problem, or something you need to change, she will outgrow it in time. My son nursed to sleep until he was eight months old and then he decided he didn't need to any more - I never forced it. Some people would say this is spoiling - I say you can never spoil anything with love. :) Try getting the hang of nursing lying down - that way you can relax when she's on the breast. There is absolutely no need to pump or supplement - in fact you shouldn't at this stage, your breastfeeding relationship is not yet established and pumping and bottles could potentially mess it up. I know it probably seems overwhelming right now - I found the first 2 weeks especially hard - but it does get better in time! Good luck!

My daughter is 3months old now. But when she was 2 weeks old she would scream like crazy from a belly ache. I took her to the Dr. and he told me not to switch formula and that it was just a newborn tummy problem that would go away. Sure enough it did within a week. Don't switch formula without going to the Dr. first. That could actually make it worse. Newborns tummies are very sensitive to change and it might just take time. If not the Dr. will help you find a formula that will help your daughter.

I would say it could also be the formula. My daughter breastfeeds but substitutes a bottle a couple of times a day. Since she has a large baby,and he feeds long periods, she has trouble pumping, the doctor put the baby on Enfamil w/iron. The baby was miserable with gas and cried all the time. She then tried Enfamil w/o iron, and still had problems. The doctor switched him to soy, and he is doing fine now. There are gas drops you can buy also that work well. Do not do anything without talking to your doctor though. I know it can be very frustrating, but with the doctor's help, you will get her straightened out. Hang in there, and good luck with your new little one.

Well I would say you might need to change the formula if she is fussy like that. My daughter was on nutramigen because she had an allergy to milk I am now deciding on what to put her on now that she is 1 year. I think you need to try carnation good start first and then go from there.. try lactose free, soy, nutramigen...etc. I will tell you nutramigen was all mine could handle and it was very expensive(24) a can. I will tell you carnation good start is a great formula and it helps kids with tummy discomforts because it is more broken down!! If any thing else tell your pedi to give you lepson drops ( prescription for gas) It works a wonder.

need anything else ask !!

Good Luck

Gas relief drops. BUY THEM NOW! They'll help you get through. My son was exactly the same and needed the drops at night fairly frequently. I breastfed for a while and I realized it was only when I ate onions or garlic. When we switched him to formula he had the same problem but only with the new Similac Advance those new ingredients really gave him a belly-ache. Try switching formulas. Maybe a soy baed one just to see what happens.

They sell gas drops at Walmart and I am sure a bundle of other stores. These worked miracles for our little man when he was a baby. A few drops of that stuff and it seemed that his belly ache was gone before the stuff had time to hit his tummy. We had it on hand all the time. Good Luck to you! I hope it gets better!

You can gently rub her tummy. My daughter started with her babies to put their legs over their heads several times. Generally the gas in their little belly's come out and feel better. {I don't care for the word but they fart}

What I find incredulous is all 3 of her kids are extremely limber because of it. Just lay her on her back on the bed and lift her little legs a few times up to her head and see if it helps. It sure can't hurt. My daughter sort of made a game out of it.

Have you tried any kind of gas drops? You can use mylicon or little tummys. Also you might want to make an appointment as the doctor might need to change her milk. My daughter went throught the same thing she had reflux and well had her milk changed several times.
