In the word Christmas, there is the words Christ and mas. Christ refers to Jesus Christ probably and the religion Jesus is in, which uses a cross like the ones on a church and an "X" is also known as a cross.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xmas

It is false that the "X" stands for the cross that Christ was supposedly crucified on.

The breakdown goes like this:

The -mas ending comes from the Anglo-Saxon for "festival".

The "x" could be because of the abbreviation of Christ as "XP" or "Xt". In this case the X is for the Greek letter "chi".

X is the Greek letter "Chi." X was used by early Christians, and even later, as a sort of shorthand. The word "Christ" was often abbreviated as XP or Xt, hence "Christ"-mas became "X-mas."

"X" is a shortened form of "Christ." Chi Rho: A monogram composed of two Greek letters so named, resembling the Roman X and P; but in reality CH and R. They are an abbreviation of the Greek word Christos (Christ).

It's for the idiots that can't spell CHRISTMAS and for the rest that are too lazy to write it out full length.
