That is a very profound question. To look at it, we'll have to look at structure. Before, there were amphibians ruling the earth, after, reptiles. Reptiles, unlike amphibians, could lay and hatch eggs outside of water, making them able to spread. Eventually, dinosaurs were triumphant, and evolved to different sizes and forms to maintain the environment. Because there were so many, and because they were larger, mammals were at high risk, and not many could survive. The mammal's small stature, however, probably saved it from the K-T extinction 65 million years ago that killed the dinosaurs, starting the age of mammals.

Coz dinos were the first gigantic and intelligent creatures to walk the Earth. Other mammals and insects are no match to them.
