Mouse traps are very effective if baited with peanut butter.
If you have no place you can put the traps that the 3 year old cannot get to (is your house childproofed in any way) than you may need to buy something or construct something that allows the mouse to enter, but is child proofed against kids.
I know they sell "motels" for mice and rodents that are usually baited with poison, you might just have to switch the poison for baited mouse traps. The mice will find the peanut butter.

I've had two of the electronic units in my home for several years. No mice or any signs of them. This was the safest way for me to go as I have indoor pets.
They can be purchased at Wal-Mart, Lowe's & Home Depot and probably most hardware stores - not very expensive.
They're based on the square footage of your home, so that will determine how many you need.
Hope this helps & good luck!

A little p'nut butter on a spring trap works pretty good. Another good, non-toxic, method is to mix ordinary CEMENT with CORN MEAL. Mix about 50/50. The cement gets into their system and does permanent damage and kills them. They like the corn meal. Kind of a last supper....I have never seen cats or dogs eat this stuff..

if you know where they are coming from, set up humane traps near the holes in the wall. The trap catches them and scoops them into a "holding cell" of sorts until you can let them go. Home Depot or Lowe's should have them. On a more harsher note, you can fill the hole with steel wool--they cut their mouths on it when trying to chew through.

Buy traps similar to ones called, "HaveaHeart." They are foolproof, and do an excellent job. Of course, after you catch any rats, you will have to figure out what to do with them, for they will be alive.
