You place an ad on craigslist, and you get urgent replies from yahoo.co.uk addresses. The people say they want to move in right away, sight unseen, and they need details. Then, they send you a check for way more than you asked for, and they want you to send them a refund check. Their check is no good, so you're stuck with the bag, and you have no idea who they are.

Let's expose the rip offs!

It's just a different twist on a fairly old scam. I've seen that in response to ads for almost anything from cattle to cars to a bicycle.

Simply advise them that you only accept certified funds drawn on a local bank in your area, and only for the agreed amount. If excess funds are included, tell them your policy is to hold the funds for 6 months and then only release them in certified funds payable through a US bank and sent by Registered Mail. That will shut them down COLD.

Hey friends, best be careful...bank checks, cashier check and maybe even certified checks may be canceled by the purchaser. It happened to me with a bank check, the tenant called the bank an hour after it was presented to me. I got a call from my bank with the bad news.

#1 why don't you ask for a cashier check written on US Funds? All banks have a foreigh exchange department. I had a tenant one time that she was from Japan. Her parents where going to give six months rent before she came to the US. I refused their money until I verified their bank account. I had them to send me a copy of their bank statement notarized, proof of income, three business references, etc. I prequailied her parents before I offer their daughter the apartment. Because of the fraud issues inside and outside of the US, you have to check out people very carefully.
