The best ones are usually free : AVG, Avast or Avira. I used all 3 of these at one time or another and finally decided that Avira is the best. It doesn't take up lot of resources like Avast and has a better virus detection than AVG. Not too many people know about this exceptional scanner. Here's the link : http://www.free-av.com

Had tried AVG , McAfee and Norton..

Overall I would choose AVG for its performance and speed.

AVG runs on a daily updates and most importantly does not seems to slow down the PC while scanning.

Norton is really trusted. Make sure you look into it though before you choose one, because i once downloaded PestTrap thinking it was a virus protector but it was actually a virus, so be careful. Maybe check Consumer Reports?
