Lindas' explanation is great if you want to read an encyclopedia , but it doesn't answer the question. (sorry Linda)
As the bodies functions do there thing overnight, the bladder fills and puts pressure on the prostate and the blood vessels leading to the organ in question. This pressure simulates the sequence of events that occurs normally in healthy males every night, even if they're not aware of it. If one wakes up during this normal function, there ya have it.
After urinating, the pressure is relieved and the erection seises.

Okay I will try and explain how erections happen but you will be most amazed by the fact that most of the time (at least in young men ) we don't do anything. Also, you will have to put up with a long explanation. In order to have sex a male penis must be erect. That erection is related to physical health, mental health, and emotional health (ego) If a male is threatened or scared or has anxiety about sex he may not be able to get erect. Erections occur when more blood is pumped into the special tissue in the penis than can leave. The arteries carry blood to the penis and the veins carry blood away from the penis. When the brain gives the command the arteries dilate (become very large) and more blood is pumped into the penis than can be carried away by the smaller veins. The result is the penis becomes engourged with blood and becomes erect. When erect it becomes more sensitive and sexual arousal is easier. The following things will trigger the command in the brain so that an erection occurs. Physical stimulation (the boy or other person touch and rubs the penis), visual stimulation (the boy sees a girl, a picture, or woman in a form of undress that triggers an erection) Males are genetically engineered to be set off by visual stimulations. This is one reason why most users of pornography are males. In childhood and early puberty (5 to 13) boys can get spontaneous erections. The brain just decides to trigger an erection. This is very embarrassing to boys because it happens at school, while at play, in front their girl friends, in the shower during PE. The boy does nothing to cause this it just happens really! Girls think boys are always horny and that is true for teen agers but boys don't do it the hormones do it to them. Mental stimulation, sometimes just thinking about a special girl or having masturbated last night etc. will stimulate an erection. Boys get no rest while they sleep either. While a boy sleeps at night he usually has up to 7 erections in his sleep. And if he has not masturbated for several days and is of the age to produce semen he may have an orgasm in his sleep ( a wet dream ) in which he shoots semen all over his PJ's or briefs and the bed sheets. It is usually a rather large amount. Then in the morning he wakes up with a very hard erection that is the result of pressure from a full urinary bladder on the veins in his penis. That has to be dealt with in some way so he can urinate. Erections are very much a part of a man's life. In our youth we do not do a lot to cause them they just happen. As we mature and enter puberty we learn to take charge of our sexuality and to control them to some degree but not totally. A man can cause an erection by physical stimulation, visual stimulation, sex play with a partner, or mental stimulation or fantasy. And most men use those things to get erections at private moments in order to masturbate in private and release all that sexual tension. When a man gets a partner then she helps release all the sexual tension and love making or having sex envolves physical, visual, and emotional stimulus.

Let us say five percent. not 99 by any chance. I think it might just be a matter of having a stimulating dream while in REM before awakening. It used to be considered that at age eighteen, a male was at his peak sexual performance. I know I was not. I have no idea how you can judge yourself as having a low testosterone level. Not waking u with an erection is not one, definitely. Testosterone is only a hormone which circulates in the blood. It does its job very well and effectively without any drama that you might be going through. When the system is 'low' the pituitary informs the testicles to release more and they do. All done quietly without you knowing anything about it. But you can prove it to yourself with in your usual way. Actually, you will not need to worry about testosterone loss yet for another fifty years. If you have to, you will find all about that then.

Science might explain erections but why care. Basically all normal healthy guys get them and they have this tendency to cause us embarassment despite the fact they occur to us all and everyone knows we get them.

As for th emorning ones, they are just the ones we notice when we awaken assumign we awaken at the right time. During sleep we get an erection about every 45 minutes so if you awaken when you are erect then you notice it. And for those who awaken between erections they don't actually realize hom many times they actually get erect since they sleep through most of them.

Linda gave a very thorough answer and accurate description of male anatomy, but slightly missed the mark on the actual "morning erection" question. Basically, a healthy male has spontaneous erections throughout the night during sleep (as Linda pointed out) not only because of arousal during dream state but it is the body's way of continuallynourishing the equipment of the anatomy with "fresh" blood flow. As noted, an erection is caused by the dilation of arteries within the penis and surrounding structures. When you are not erect (flaccid) the blood flow is still there but minimal. A spontaneous erection is your body's way of "flushing out the pipes" to keep them open, flexible, and to ensure success in the future when you actually WANT/NEED an erection. The MAJOR reason you WAKE with erections, either full, stiff, or partial is because ALL men's testosterone levels PEAK in the AM around 5a - 8a (based on circadian rhythms). Your male body gives you a "boost" of testosterone in the AM to get you awake, alert, and ready for "fight or flight" (vestige of our caveman days when we had to wake up raring and ready to go kill, defend, whatever and have our maximum alertness and strength with us). It is the peaking of the testosterone level that gives you the "morning wood" as it was referred to earlier.
