Well I think the reason why its disrespected in the world of art is because you spray graffiti on things that it shouldn't be sprayed on. Try spraying it on the streets or sidewalk during a parade use graffiti in a helpful way not in a bad way. And I bet you it will be respected in the world of art.

because when graffiti was brought into the "art world" by the 80's art elite it was merely an imitation of what they had seen on the streets, rather than original work... The graffiti artists who went into the galleries were known as sell-outs who had abandoned their roots.
(Honestly, if you are interested in graffiti and it's origins in the US, I recommend watching the documentary "Style Wars." It's easy to get at many libraries and it's not a bad film.)

Graffiti started on buildings, trains and other property; without the consent of the owner. This is against the law as it is a form of vandalism. So this leaves a sour taste in the mouth of most people. No matter how beautiful graffiti is; because of it's roots, it seems to carry the negative stigma with it.

This isnt always true. Many cities have legal graffiti areas where artists can focus on creating awesome tags without having to worry about getting caught. Because of these sights, the public gets to appreciate it more and more, and I think it is already recognized as art by most people.

Destruction of private property. If you pay for a wall then you should be allowed to paint on it. And a lot of times graffiti has a vulgar messages or gang signs. I would say that this is not a good thing to promote to the little kids looking out of the back-seat of mommy's minivan.

In the art world I am sure that there is a growing # of people that respect it for what it is. At least any new-age artists should respect it as an art form. Though I am sure that the fuddy-duddy class sees it as nothign more than "tagging".
The problem is the publics general view of it, they still see it as having a bad meaning and cannot see the form and skill that it takes to actually make it "art".
Any idiot can "tag" a wall, but only a few can use that form to express true art with it!

I agree with most of the other answers - it's a kind of violence being done to other's property. In that way it deserves to be disrespected. However, I liken it to rap music. It's another art form and when it's well done, it becomes more acceptable. Do it well or not at all.

it is someone else's property and it doesnt need to be destroyed
if graffiti was an advirtisement it would better suit the people

It is disrespected because it's illegal and consitered vandalism. (Gangs also use graffiti)We would have no problems if graffiti was kept indoors or off public property.
