I believe Graffiti is a form of art that became popularized during the early 80's (though its been around much longer) and mainstreamed by our teen generation today.
I believe the reason there is such controversy regarding Graffiti is because of the places these artists choose to work (i.e., freeway walls, buses, trains, stop signs, public and private property..)
If voters and city counselmen would take the time to open their minds to this new generation and took it seriously as a form of expression as i believe it is, we could come up with some way to compromise and come to a resolution together.
How about a city funded art gallery for graffiti? A studio solely for graffiti artists, that way, we could keep it off of freeway signs, and use it as an inspiration to younger generations that might be skilled in this area but with nowhere to legally put it, and no one whos interested in seeing it, decides to tag up a sidewalk and get arrested if caught leaving less room in our jails for more serious law breakers.
It's an art form that hasn't been accepted by the majority because the majority is closeminded.

It's freedom of speech so to speak. Sure it's not nice to deface any property not owned by the person doing the writing ot drawing but it's what they feel they have to do to express themselves. I've seen some pretty nice graffiti and I can appreciate it. It's the the nasty ones I could care less about but that's what they want to say so I guess I just deal with it!

Graffiti in general is bad, it shows gang presence and is sure to cause gang violence.
On the other hand, Graffiti as an art form is quite nice. As long as it is done this way I like it, and would love to learn how to do it.

As an art form I think graffiti looks real cool. The vibrant colors and designs make it stand out from more traditional painting methods. However I do not like it when it is used as vandalism. I woke up one morning to find someone had sprayed their initials on my car and was not pleased...it took forever to get it off.

graffiti is an art.If done right, with an artistic/aesthetic intent, even if it is on someone else's property,it's art,it deserves respect. It's better that all the photoshopmade works other call artistic,it's not done by hand, the only finger those people use is the index.....................as a printmaker/graphic artist(not graphic designer!!),i have more respect for people that go out there, and paint/spray their tags and graffiti on someone else's property, than the nerds that use photoshop..........graffiti is an illegal mural,as in mural,an art form!!!

I think it makes the whole area it's in look so trashy. Most graffitti artists are actually very good at their art, but they could use it in more consructive ways, like becomiing a graphic artist or something where they could put that talent to better use. Graffitti all over town makes the town look so run down and "ghetto." I'm sorry, but it does.

in regards to Shannanig...I live by a railroad track and watch trains often as I wait for them to pass. The graffiti on the cars is often beautiful and a welcome change/addition to the boring clickety clack of the cars.....It is so fleeting and elegant. I think it is beautiful.
