As soon as you become sexually active, or your 18th birthday, whichever happens first, you should start having regular pap smears done. But your regular doctor may be able to do those.
Of course if you have any problems down there that your regular doctor can't deal with, then you may need to go sooner.
The only time I went to a gynecologist was when I was 15 because I was having pains in my ovaries. I just go to my regular doc for pelvic exams and smear tests. You might never get around to seeing an actual gynecologist until you get pregnant.

More often than not, most of us go if there are problems. If you don't seem to have any problems, most girls and women go for a check-up once a year, kind of like an annual physical, just to check on things make sure everything is okay. If you become sexually active, then you should definitely go. It doesn't hurt to have a doctor that you can ask questions, find out about things, you know. For years I didn't have any other doctor than a gyn - they took care of any health problems that I had.

What is recommended is that you go when you are 18 or when you become sexually active.
It is really not necessary to go before this unless you are experiencing problems in that region. If you arent sexually active and have experienced no problems and are under 18, there is really no point in going UNLESS you want practice!! Thats not such a bad idea!!

My mom had me going when I turned 18..many young girls dont go until they become sexually active, but if you are feeling more pain than usual or heavier flow than normal..than Id go see one now to get put on some kind of birth control method to stabalize your cycle and help with any pains. If you feel comfortable going now than talk to an adult and discuss going. It cant hurt anything and its for your own good. Good luck and happy holidays.
