A few things need to be clarified here.
I don't think genius and maddness exist on the same continuum. Also, there is a difference between excentricity and mental illness.
A deep missunderstanding of what mental illness is has lead to this idea of the insane genius. The mentally ill can be just as intelligent as anybody else, but a part of their psyche is not functionning properly, is functionning hyperactively, or is otherwise missadapted. Einstein was not insane, neither was Shakespeare, Cervantes, Renoir or Picasso. The vast majority of geniusses are not insane, just as the vast majority of the general population is not insane.
The fact that somebody can be mentally ill does not take away from the fact they may also be talented individuals in one field or another. Van Gogh clearly suffered a mental illness (Probably Schizophrenia). He was also an extremelly talented painter. Would he have felt the same urge to paint were it not for his disease? Hard to tell, but I don't think it's legitimate to conclude his talent was caused by his madness, and the reverse is clearly medically wrong.
Great artists are often very excentric. But they are usually not mentally ill. I believe their excentricity does have to do with their artistic vision; they create because they don't really feel like one of the herd, and have an indivduality which needs expressing. But excentricity is not mental illness. It is a series of quirks of personality. There is no descent from excentricity to mental illness. Excentric people may be at odds with society, but they live in bascially the same world as everybody else (You enter a room and see a chair, a window and a table, and so do they).
As for those artists who truly are mentally ill, as above, I don't think we can conclude their illness is either a cause, or an effect of their talent, but simply a facet of a complex human being.

just before you take the wrench and tighten it one more time and the nut breaks that was the time to quit

(genius)-most of us have the training to do things backwards so that when were finished we can offer the answer that someone needs, most people go through the problem and arrive at another problem and do not exceed the realm of expectations needed to give good answers, so i have this in mind when insanity begins i have it driving the forces of needed information before i let go of it

i hated parents that could only say what we couldn't do-but had no wants to get into what we could do-made me come up with all the stuff that life is worth instead of the denials of what could be taken away if i failed-be a genius and give uncommon abilities to people who want to rise above this style of insanity

Very subjective as one person's definition of an insane person may be another person's definition of a genius. Also time is key here, there have been numerous examples throughout history of those who lived and died thought as insane who were actually just ahead of their time.

Genius ends and insanity begins when the purpose, motives, and results of actions taken result in harm to the environment, individuals, and groups.

The final line between genius and insanity is rationality. Once you cross over to the irrational side, you are no longer a genius.

When you think you know everything, because no one possibly could. Some people would go to any extreme to prove that they are right, or not listen to others. When they don't listen to others and end up doing something that will harm others. When they think all their ideas are fool proof. I think Van Gogh life was his work, when you become your work and nothing else matters.

It seems to happen when genius is bulked and not reconized , as in Van Gogh his genius was never reconized in his lifetime and he died penniless

i think genius ends and insanity begins when a person starts to exhibit behaviours contrary to the norms of society.. it is COOL TO BE SMART.. and to teach others the lessons that they need help in.. but it's UNCOOL TO BE SO SMART.. and be so busy thinking and reading, that you don't have time for the people who matter the most.. knowledge is no use if it is not used.. that's why SCIENCE is always paired with technology..

Genius, has no begining or end, it is one with God, it is recognized when the ego gets out of the way. Insanity begins with Fear, fear evokes anger, anger turns to hate and hate leads to insanity.
