My niece Veronica is 19 and she does not wear panties or a bra under her leotard and tights. She says that her dance teacher told her that she is not supposed to wear anything under her leotard and tights. She told her that they are designed to be worn without panties or a bra. My concern is that some of these outfits seem very revealing and she does not like to wear anything over them when she is going to and from her classes.

My Niece's teacher is a woman and very well respected I guess. As far as how she gets to school, she walks one block from her house and takes the bus to the dance studio. She takes the bus home also. It's about 3 miles on the bus. In the colder weather she wears a coat or jacket but when it's nice out she just wears her leotard and tights while riding the bus to and from class.

I never wear a bra or panties when I wear a leotard and tights. They are designed to be worn that way. Your niece is fine just like she is. Stop worrying! I wear my leotard and tights to and from classes and I even do some grocery shopping on the way home somtimes. Sometimes I wear a t-shirt over them and sometimes I don't. If she's comfortable that way don't worry about it.

If she looks good in a leotard and tights she should wear them any way she wants to. If she likes the way they feel without the bra and panties then she should wear them that way. I'm not a dancer so I don't know if her dance teacher is correct but I would think she would be the expert! She's 19 so she should be able to decide for herself how she wants to wear her leotard and tights!

Well she's 19 and she can decide for herself if she wants to wear a bra and panties under her leotard and tights. If her dance teacher says that this is the way to wear them she must be right. If she likes to wear them that way then that's her decision. She is also old enough to decide when, where and how she will wear her leotard and tights. If she wants to wear them uncovered to and from class just let her. She knows what she's doing!

If her dance teacher told her not to wear anything under them, then that's what she should do. Tights and leotards aren't that revealing, as they cover legs, arms and trunk. Certainly they are much less revealing than the hipster jeans and halter tops that so many young women wear to school.
Does she drive to her classes? Walk? Take the bus? Are we talking about someone who is in the public eye for an hour and a half on the way to class, or two minutes from the parking lot into the building? Either way, don't make her selfconscious about her outfit. That's what she's going to wear for performances too, and the last thing she needs to worry about is whether anyone is looking at her.

I'm on a drill team and we are allowed to wear a bra and panties under our leotard when we are practicing but during a performance we are not allowed to wear panties under our tights. The tights are our panties. However if you want her to you can always get here really thin and seamless panties. That's what I started to do. She should also wear a cover-up when she is walking to and from class and then take it off when she arrives.

Leotards are not transparent as far as I know. So wearing a bra or panties underneath will not change much, as far as revealing goes. Bras under leotard are worn for support. She'll probably know it better than any of us here what kind of support she needs. It's not like she is not supposed to wear anything underneath, it's more like she doesn't have to. Yes, they are designed in such a way that one doesn't have to wear a bra and panties. She is a dancer and she probably knows what she is doing. Saying that the teacher told her not to wear them - I think it's just her not wanting to deal with you and pushing it off on the teacher.

If it makes her feel uncomfortable without them, she should have the right to wear them. A sports bra usually works well, and to be honest, thongs are actually more comfortable than panties when in a leotard (and they don't show the panty lines) She and her mom should talk it over with her teacher.

They are revealing. They're supposed to be. A dance teacher needs to see the dancer's body in every line to make sure the dancer is correctly aligned, balanced properly, and executing movements the way she should be. This is why dancers wear tights that cling and a leotard that faithfully outlines every line and curve. It's not about showing off a body, it's about letting the teacher see exactly how a student of dance is using the tool she's honing - her body.

Everyone else is dressed just like your niece in dance class - everyone else's body is showing just as much as your niece's is so it's not like she's wearing revealing clothes and everyone else is bundled up in parkas and snow pants.

I understand the need for going without underwear in competition but not in the practice studio. Your discomfort should not be dismissed. It`s hard to focus on anything when you`re preoccupied & overly self-conscious. I would ask her what harm can come from you wearing underwear in class? What do your parents think of this rule? If they agree with you, have them speak with her. As you pay her salary, you might have more of a voice than you think. Have u tried wearing 2 leotards? If they`re the same type and size, your instructor might not notice the double up. If u try this with tights, the second layer will probably need 2B 1 size bigger. Another trick is to use paper tape (medical tape - avail. in drug stores in 1st aid section) to prevent your nipples from poking through the fabric of your leotard. The tape is breathable, doesn`t hurt to remove, & non-irritating 2 skin). Cut 2 strips (a band-aid size amount should work fine) & tape down the nipple. If u see the outline of the tape, try cutting larger pieces so they reach all the way to your armpit. Failing all of the above, there`s a line of bras & underwear available that is designed to be inconspicuous under clothing. I haven`t worn it with a leotard, but it doesn`t show under other body conscious clothing. It`s made by Jockey & should be available at major department stores (Sears, for one). The sales rep should be familiar with it. Bring your leotard to the store & try on some of the bras beneath it. If you can`t see the bra outline, you shouldn`t see the underwear outline either.
