Here's a strange problem. My friend buys duplicate gifts and I don't know why. I bought a dress shirt as a gift and showed it to my friend. My friend bought the same shirt in a different color as a gift to the same person. I bought a leather bomber jacket for a relative. My friend bought a cheaper version of the same jacket - same color, same style, but thinner material - as a gift for the same relative. I bought a vintage Swiss army backpack for a friend who hikes and has trouble finding a good sturdy backpack. My friend bought a second-hand travel backpack for the same person. I spend time and effort finding nice gifts that the recipient will enjoy. If my friend discovers any of my gifts, my friend goes out and buys a cheaper, less nice version of the gift for the same person. This has happened before but this Christmas it's just out of control. The only gifts my friend hasn't duplicated are the ones my friend hasn't seen. Why does my friend do this?

Why? Because your friend is weird and/or has no confidence. You obviously have good taste and some perception as to what a person will want as a gift. She (?) either doesn't want to spend the time and effort to think up something original, or is so unconfident in her choices and social skills that she chooses not to risk buying something unique and individual. Make sure she doesn't know what you've bought in the future. (Must be weird for the person receiving the gifts!!)

she probably cant think of what to get them so she just copies you. I think next year you should shock her and keep your gifts a total secret do not tell ANYONE and get them wrapped at the shop so your friend cant find out whats in them. Then she will be forced to spend her time thinking of the gift herself rather than copying you.

Have you tried asking her not to do this?
Maybe you should, I know from experience becouse sometimes I copy my sisters gift but I dont give it to the same person. Good Luck!

please don't show them anymore! they don't have their own gift ideas so they mooch yours. since yours is of higher quality, its obvious you care more. instead of telling them what you are getting, ask them what they're getting them and pretend you don't know yet. try to get them to put thought into their gift instead of taking other's ideas.
