My computer is branded with an 80 gig hard drive, it even says it on the outside of the computer on the sticker. But when I go to "My Computer", it says that I have two hard drives, one called ACER (the brand of my computer) has a total of 34.5 gig in all. The other, called ACERDATA has 35 gigs on it, none used. Why is this? Are the two supposed to add up to 80? What the heck? I hope I didn't buy a crummy computer!

It would appear that the hard drive is partitioned and I am guessing that they did this just in case you needed to do a restore on it. You should be able to save to either drive and would suggest you select the second partitioned disk as most likely the first one has your OS on it and it will run faster with less junk on the drive.
Now for the other part, not always do hard drives come to the exact number that is listed, sometime less sometimes more but usually around the amount that is is listed. So everything sounds OK to me and I would not worry to much about it.

No you did not buy a crummy computer the 80 gigabyte harddrive is eighty it is just partitioned into two seperate drives... and even if a harddrive says 80 or 40 or 20 it's usually a little bit smaller than that ... that's just the way they are....

It could be a couple of things... First you could have a hidden partition which contains system restore files or the like. Second based on the cluster size and file system used, the drives could just have some space that would not fit into the clustering scheme thus remain unused free space. To reclaim this, you could further partition or reformat and adjust the cluster size.

Probably 80 gb partitioned. ACER is probably your drive 'C' and ACERDATA is drive 'D'.
