Check multiple place by chipping small test holes. It should be at least 4" thick. Cracking sounds are not necessarily a sign of bad ice. You should still stay away from deep ponds and watch for thin spots, they can be anywhere.

When it looks like an ice cube. If it's dark then it's not completely solid. If in doubt don't skate! wait until you see people skating on it!

If you step out and hear that snap cracle pop sound it's not ready. Other than that, stay away from the deep part until you've testedit and are fairly sure of it.

I'm totally kidding, don't do that. Find something "pick" like, and jam it into the ice....ice should be 2-3 inches thick to hold your weight.
