They are an ethnic minority from Vietnam, residing mainly in the Central Highlands districts. They have long suffered discrimination from ethnic Vietnamese, who controlled the government.

During the War in Vietnam (1954-1975), many Montagnards sided with and helped the United States forces, and as a result, they were repressed even more after the United States pulled out its forces in defeat in 1975.

After the War, many who sided with the United States fled. Ethnic Vietnamese and Hmong live in great numbers in several parts of the US, especially California, Texas and Minnesota.

Few of the Montagnards left, however, and they are still treated unequally in Vietnam, though life is generally improving.

Many of those who did leave have been living for decades in refugee camps in countries near Vietnam, especially Cambodia and Thailand, where they are also not recognized as equal.
