well, it depends on how you look at it. the french horn is known as the hardest brass instrument to learn. but the oboe and basoon are known as the hardest wioodwinds to learn. i personally think the look of the horn is cooler... it is soo swirly and shiney. LOL. but the oboe's sound is way cool.. however, i am a big fan of the french horn's wicked awsome mellow sound. I like the french horn more bacause i play it.. well..... i play oboe too but not for very long so im not good at it yet.. (just FYI... trumpets rock too) i think clarinettes are soo uncool that they should never be used in the same sentances as the other two.

I've been in many different orchestras and have heard many different instruments b/c my parents are very into music.
I would say it mainly depends on you. What do YOU like best?
But if you really can't choose, here's what I think.
If you're trying to get into an orchestra, do oboe.
The competition is so much less than clarinets, flutes, violins, etc.
French horns sound good and many people say it is easier to learn that oboe.
I also know that french horn and oboe are similar and you can learn one and learn the other very quickly.
Clarinets are very beautiful, but have much more competition.
I guess it's really up to you.
I hope this helped.

CLARINETS!! I'm a level six yay!! Well, the oboe is whiney and annoying sounding, and the French horn is extremely hard to play.

Clarinets are gay? gee you must be mad. That wasn't a nice thing to say... but i would have to say oboes are better then clarinets and french horns because DUH! sam plays the oboe! and JOIN THE OBOE FAN CLUB! But I guess clarinets are good too because you play that.

I think that a clarinet is better. Oboes aren't that fun to play I played clarinet and alto saxophone in band.

My grandfather played the oboe and taught it too. He always said it was the hardest instrument. Go for the French horn.

You have to realize each instrument has its own virtues. What is the best topping for a pizza? What is the best way to style your hair? How often should I clip my toenails (if at all)? These are all personal questions, as is the question of which instrument is the best.

To develop your own conclusions, you need to listen to recordings and truly experience the instruments. Each person has a different way of experiencing music, but I think you should start by purposefully finding different examples to make a judgement.

Try this website, you will get a good idea of what the instruments sound like and then YOU can make your own conclusions.

The oboe is whiney, well this is coming from a person who likes a squeeky instrument. Go for the oboe, if you want a challenge.
