Check at Walmart. You can be sure that the seats will be up to standard and the prices should be good. Two seats seem to stand out as being the best buy for the money and they are considered safe - the Graco and the Evenflo Triumph. These sites should help you. Best of luck with it.

I was just talking to a friend about carseats. She has two forward facing carseats that she loves. One is a Combi, which is a great brand and not expensive. The other is a Brittax. I think the Brittax is a little more money but its also more plush. She also suggested buying online. Some places have free shipping and are cheaper than the stores.

NEVER buy a carseat second hand unless you can be 100% certain that the carseat was never in a car that had an accident. That is soooooo critical. Also, make sure you look at the bottom of the car seat to check the expiration date. Yes, all car seats have them. It is generally a point of five years from the date of manufacture.

If your child is over 22 pounds (and obviously is over one year), Britax makes a seat called the REGENT. It's the only seat in the US that has a 5 pt harness to 80 pounds. It is a forward facing only seat. We really like ours, had to buy online, though. Britax has three models that go to 65 pounds in a 5 pt harness, but like the Regent, they will all cost $200+.
A good affordable seat is the Evenflo Triumph, but it only goes fwd facing to 40 pounds, and at that point, you'd need to invest in booster seats. Ours was $120 at Babies R Us.
If you're able to, I'd try to invest in a Britax since they will grow with your child for so long, and they do really well in crash tests. However, if you can't afford it, the Evenflo did just as well (particularly if your car doesn't have LATCH, which after I think 40 pounds or so, you can't use anyway), just be aware that you will probably have to buy another booster seat of some sort once your child hits 40 pounds, and the money you will spend then will probably put you near the total of one of the Britax seats (if that makes sense). The sites in my sources will help you figure out the best seat for your car/child.

Make sure its a five point harness and you should be good. All carseats sold in the store are safety tested and have to pass regulations. The most important thing is that it is installed properly. You can buy a $200 carseat that is suppose to be the safest one available but if it isnt installed properly its useless. If you are unsure the best way to install it stop by your local fire station and one of the Firemen will be happy to show you. Thats what I did with both of my children.

They are pretty much the same, as long as your kid is over 1 year old they can go in a front facing carseat. If you go to Target or Walmart, get one that has the harness that goes over the chest and over the hips, kinda in an "H" formation. and make sure it has the strap that goes between the legs.

you should get a 5pt harness. Personally i think you get your moneys worth with the Britax Marathon it allows 5pt harness up to 65 pounds about the age of 6-7. and then you can booster your child or not depending on your state law ours is 8 and 80 pounds. So in my state the Marathon would be a great buy

There are many choices in the market. Get one within your budget. I believe they have been approved by the relevant authority thus there is not safety being compromised. Look for one that is NOT front facing. The child can be thrown out in any arupt stop. Be safe!
