I have two questions:

1) Is the green pigment in leaves a single compound or several compounds?

2) Why do leaves go through various color changes as they die? explain in as much detail as you can- really confused about this :(

I'm no expert on biology but i'll do my best...

1) The green pigment is the chlorophyll, which is used during photosynthesis. Chlorophyll alone has different kinds, so i think that they are made up of several compounds, since each kind of chlorophyll only attracts a particular spectrum of light...

2) I think the different colours of a leaf is due to the different pigments showing at different times, but i can't be certain. So for a red leaf, only the red pigments are shown, and so on. Also the colour of the leaves depend on the environment of the plant, so if a plant lived in a very sunny area, then during Autumn its leaves are likely to turn red, whereas a plant that has had very little exposure to light, will have more yellow leaves.
Hope my answers helped a bit.
