I would like to become a Terry Pratchet fan but don't know where to start. I have never read one and don't know the characters or sub-themes.

i would start at the beginning of the series, with 'the colour of magic' just to get the feel of the discworld and its assorted people in your head. after that, the discworld is your oyster!

i would say the main thing is to read the books in roughly the right order (look on inside cover). this means that although each book is fairly self contained, you'll understand all the silly comments relating to previous books. it also means that you won't miss any out, which would be a terrific shame. :-(

just to help, there are three main sections the books can be split into - city watch, rincewind, death and the witches, and well as a couple that don't fit any, so don't get confused by the sudden change in characters!

hope this helps! rachel

ps. pratchett has a double t!
pps. great books, but you've got to have a really twisted sense of humour! enjoy...

Well as Elizabeth Howard said you could start at the beginning with the book The Colour Of Magic. The First Book of Terry Pratchett that I read was Sourcery. And from then on I was hooked on his Disc World Books. I've read most of his novels, but have still to get a couple of the earlier ones that I missed.

Wyrd Sisters, followed by Witches Abroad then Masquerade.

They introduce or enlarge most of the main Discworld charachters and give insight into Pratchet's own unique 'headology'

in the start, astounding selection on studying cloth! i love the Discworld novels. i'd recommend beginning with both the Tiffany Aching series (Wee loose adult males, Hat finished of Sky, Wintersmith) or different witch books (Wyrd Sisters, and so on). you may also initiate with Going Postal and earning money or the Guards novels (Guards! Guards!, Thud!, ft of Clay). in case you wanted to study them interior the order they were written you ought firstly the colour of Magic and the mild magnificent. extremely a lot any of the novels will be fantastic firstly because that's not a collection time that they are written for. i'm hoping you want them!

I started with guards gaurds in disc worlds and I didn't know the characters buti t was fine. You should read his books. They are very good. There are theses sarcastic quips which ppl keep missing and think the books are dumb. But they aren't. Just start somewhere. If you want a stand along, try "carpet people"

Love Him!

I've tried reading the first book a couple of times but personally found it to be quite boring. My favorite of all his books was probably The Hogsfather. It was the first book I read of his. Though it is in the middle of the series, he does a good job of keeping you with what is going on in Disk world.

Any of his books that features Death is bound to be great.

Small Gods is good if you're still undecided because it's more or less standalone. It's also a good comment on the state of religion in our society, but that's just a bonus.

Read the Disc world in sequence, start with 'The Color of Magic' and work on from there.
