In Iraq you're dealing with a culture that has been at war with themselves for hundreds of years. As well as the fact that the religious beliefs of the area so vastly differ from the type of system that we're trying to put in place there. Couple these facts with segments of the population that have been kept oppressed by other segments of the same population under the rule of Sadam and that the last time that we marched into their country offering freedom we cut tail and run then tell me what all that equates out to.

There are many reasons why things aren't going so well. First of all, G.W. figured that the invasion would be the same as Desert Storm, that American troops would be welcomed with open arms and what resistance there might be, would be defeated by the "shock and awe" campaign. Remember that rhetoric. The is no doubt which country is stronger militarily, but this isn't armies fighting it out in a battlefield, this is basically door to door and without massive numbers of troops to hold positions taken, once the military moves on to another door, insurgents move back into the one just vacated. This is exactly what Bush was warned would happen so it shouldn't surprise anyone. The main unfortunate thing here is that it took mid-term elections to bring about some possible changes. Sorry, but I for one, have no faith in Bush, I believe in the troops , would support them in anything they do, but Bush? Don't think so.

The war was won. Saddam is gone, Iraq has a freely elected government.

The problem is a peace keeping one.

It isn't easy to fight a war when the enemy is willing to blow itself up killing everyone...women, children, dogs, cats, squirrels and rats. The Arabs have been killing one another for centuries. This is one of the many reasons that Mohammud put the Jihad into the Qu'ran. They needed something with violence, shooting rifles into the air, burning flags, spitting at pictures of Pres. Bush, etc. Blowing oneself up for the "Faith" is immediately rewarded by going like a rocket to Paradise. How do you fight that?

you're attempting to fight guerrilla type of warfare with an badly undermanned overworked army built for a conventional war, you are also attempting to impose a democracy on people who don't really know what a democracy is or even why they should want one

You can't beat Guerilla tactics with tanks...

Actually - if a nation does not want you there, there is no way on this earth you can win unless you are prepared to anhialate everyone....

Even then - it's touch and go.
