Really annoyed with myself as last year I eventually found the solution to cleaning our Georgian windows which seem to be smeared with wax from the shutters (oops! gave away annual clean only) - tonight have tried soap and water, vinegar, window cleaner spray, bleach, curses and may even resort to prayer, alchemy,voodoo...naaah. Very busy with work and family demands and can't take the small-town-biddy-brigade-judgemental-tsk-tsks (in looks only - cowards) from those who fill their empty days with polishing brasses and cleaning windows for perks of gossip and snooping as well as being nearer to you-know -who - Mr G.
Any ideas??

Well the way I wash my windows is as follows and they come up great with no streaks or drips etc; First of all fill a basin with warm soapy water, washing up liquid will do. Grab a cloth and just start washing your windows with the cloth soaked in soapy water first of course, just keep washing the whole of your widow, rinse the cloth out a few times then soak again with soapy water, once you have done all of your windows, pour warm water on windows so as it takes away the soap from the washing up liquid and then instead of drying with a cloth, grab a newspaper (yes I know you're hands will get ink over them but this can be washed off) anyway grab piece of newspaper, scrumple up and wipe the whole of the window with this until every bit of wetness is away and all that you see is shiny windows with no streaks, its a old fashioned way yes but it works. Then just wash hands afterwards and bang you've got gleaming windows.

Wax? That's bad. Try scraping it off with a razor. You can also get a lot of it off by using a junk iron on junk clothes to melt and absorb the crud.

After that, SUPER HOT water and soap may be more useful than the voodoo and alchemy.

The oldest way i can think of is newspapers (use them instead of cloth and they should be dry as you start and change them to a new page as soon as they dribble) and warm soapy water. The soap should be that stinky brown one (forgot the name). After that you can do spray just for shine. At previous house we did have a very busy road in front of us so i had to clean windows every single week.

the best thing in my experience is a table spoon of white wine vinegar and hot water nothing else apply with a soft cotton cloth and buff up and dry with a cotton tea towel specialist "glass" tea towels made for drying glass are exceptionally good and give a gleaming un smeared result! you may have to repeat this a couple of times to remove the residue of the other products and soaps you used perviously.

Use pinesol, Mr Clean, and around this time of year, use something my husband got called De-Icer. It gets rid of all the ice and other substances. Just wipe it with a clean rag and see how it works

Just use hot water (as hot as you can handle) with a splash of detergent. However not in these freezing conditions. Wait until warm weather. Good excuse to put it of and revise alchemy,
