You didn't mention what car this was you are working on, but still most likely that the carb is partially plugged up, or the carburetor base place gasket is bad. When the car is running squirt some wd40 or carb cleaner along the bottom of the carb where it joins the motor. Also along the intake where it joins the head if the intake is not integral to the head. If the engine rise in rpms you have found the vacum leak. Also pinch off the brake booster vacuum line if there is one to check that as well. If no vacuum leaks detected then that carb has some plugged passages inside it, most likely in the jets themselves.

Spray some WD-40 around the intake. The manifold gasket may be leaking. Is the carb clean? Sounds like a jet may be plugged up in the carb. Spray also around the base of the carb to look for vaccum leaks. The car will take off like crazy when you find the leak. Crack the carb open and look things over inside. Good luck.

if there is no sign of a vaccum leak...then the carburator is bad. To check for a vaccum leak....get some carburator cleaner and spray it around the base of the carb...around the intake manifold and around all the vaccum lines. If when spraying the carb cleaner in any of these areas then you have found the vaccum leak. It is highly possible the base gasket where the carb bolts down is leaking and you just can't see it.

Good luck

Yeah have the carb rebuilt or a least taken apart and cleaned. It sounds like its starving for fuel. If it backfires when the choke is open, it means its starving for gas. Try putting some "stabill" fuel treatment to a tank of gas if you dont want to take it apart and rebuild it, or spray some carb cleaner in every opening you can see in the venturi area of the cab, thats directly below the choke valve or butterfly if you preffer.

Your carb is dirty,,, try this it works all the time. Take the air cleaner off. Have a pair of gloves on. Rev it up a little,, put your hand over the air intake till it dies. This will suck all the crud out of the jets. Hold the throttle down to restart it because it is flooded now.

EASY CHEAP solution theres a neddle under the carb in front turn or screw it in until it stops. back it out a full turn crank car work the throttle quick in short bursts so to speak let car idle then you may try rev the motor half throttle and smother the engine down with a rag just before it dies let the rag and repeat.

1960,it has a carb, doesnt it?so did you spray something around the carb.,to see it theres a vaccum leak there.thats what it seems to me,is a vaccum leak.anytime you need to close the choke part way,to make it run right, then there is probably a vaccum leak.

Rebuild carb. The float level adjustment is probably too low anyways. The carb kit should come with factory specs to set adjustment screws and float level helping you start from scratch.

Check float level and air/idle fuel mixture adjustment would be where I would start.Sounds like it isn`t getting enough fuel to air.Maybe, fuel filter?Possibly increase idle speed adjustment and see if that keeps it running.Carbon passages on intake or carb plugged?
