This is a tough one. Both are creatures of the forest, both understand guerilla warfare, both have exceptional archery skills. The elves use armor however, while the classic centaur keeps armor to a minimum. The centaurs are calvary in and of themselves, and can literally overrun opponents at speed while firing arrows, but generally do not have high quality melee weapons. The elves tend to do better in that regard with razor sharp swords and spears. So in a battle, the elves lose the mobility advantage to the centaurs who attack in a running calvary charge and circle with archers. However, against elven armor centaur weapons do little, so initial elven casualties are from being trampled, while the centaurs' losses are from being sliced and stabbed as they come thru. The archers would probably decimate each other, thus neutralizing any firepower advantage for either side, but the elves' best weapon are their war mages, while the centaurs magic concentrates on divination and star-gazing. So when fireballs, lightning bolts, webs, and flesh to stone rays start arcing into the centaurs' ranks, it quickly becomes a rout. Winner: Elves. Advantage: War Mages.

Centaurs, by a mile. In a pitched battle centaurs have the speed, endurance, toughness and ferocity Elves lack. The Elves would have greater firepower and dicipline but this could not carry the day. In an ambush situation or a siege Elves would come out on top but on a pitched battle Centaurs would easily triumph.
This is of course assuming that the "warbands" are of roughly equal numbers and skills. 300 veteran elven mages would beat 50 centaur civilians without effort, and likewise a few mighty centaur heroes could kill scores of Elven warriors.

With both sides evenly matche din many aspects, it will depend on th eterrain and the battle conditions I guess.
If its in the forest, I guess the elves have more advantage, as they can sneak about in the shadows and the cover in the forest would aid the smaller build elves rather than the more cumbersome centaurs.
If its out on the plain, the centaurs would have a fighting chance. With their superior speed and strength, they could do a cavalry charge against the elves, but at the same time still using their bows.
Both sides are known for the fighting spirit so it will be hard to choose, but I side the centaurs more

Elvis, as the leader of the mighty elven war band would bravely meet the centaurs head on and decimate many of his foe by tripping them with his blue suede shoes and killing them with his pointy quiff only to be lured away by a crafty burger wielding centaur to his untimely demise, however john Lennon enraged at the swift and deadly fall of his hoofed comrades would stride through the hoard of elves like a naked Liverpudlian god, striking each and everyone with his naked sword till they fled in terror thus ensuing a place in the final for the proud if somewhat embarrassed centaurs.

Elves, definitely. You can't trust centaurs.
And once they've beaten the crap out of the centaurs, hopefully the elves will mop up any remaining smurfs too.
