I didn't start enjoying reading until I read Gone With The Wind in tenth grade. I then found Zane Grey (way before your time and you may not like westerns).
You need to find a genre that you enjoy and perhaps the best way to do that would be to think of something that really interests you. then look for books that center in on that subject. There are a lot of good writers for young people in all genres.
Try looking up Nancy Springer (author) she writes different types of books aimed at young people. Even fantasies. Try your school library. You can take a book out and try reading it, see if you like it (don't give up until you've read at least three chapters) if not exchange it for another.
Its commendable that you want to try reading as a past time, many young people would rather not. And reading builds character by teaching you things about others and the way they live, and the choices they make. Not the least of the things you learn is improved spelling, and understanding of word usage.
Enjoy. I not only read a lot, but I write novels too.

People ask me this a lot as they know I love to read.
Look its easier than you think...
Get go to a public or school library and read the signs on the bookshelves-- you know where it says science fiction, fiction, history,..ect.--
Go down the shelf row by row and read the titles-- most books that are good have catchy titles.. though as they always say (this time its literally)
TIP#1 "Don't judge a book by it's cover"
Read the back of the books and see if it sounds interesting...
Later checkout a few and read one page of one of the books ---if it sounds interesting KEEP READING.. then again, if it doesn't there's no need or obligation to proceed; move on to the next one.
Reading is like that; sort of like dating; you have to find one (or a few) that suits your needs!
Well try things like that-- I personally like Mystery novels as they keep me reading page after page in hopes of finding the anwer--- and usually when it does come along its soooo shocking(its a wonderful feeling)
Another thing you could try is looking for movies that you liked and have been based off a novel( If you liked it -- the book is most certainly even better
TIP #2: Don't judge a book on it's novel( movie always sucks-- usually!)
Well hope you like to read soon!! There's actually a solution for that but I Dont LIKE MATH--- there's no way to get me to like it!
Good luck!!

Star by going to the section of your library where you might find books sutible for your age. Then browse through the section(romance, mystery, etc..) that most interests you.
Try reading at least three books from each section. Don't stop after two chapters and assume it's a bad book. Some books take a while to get interesting. You might think you don't like a certain genre... but you never know... It might suprise what genre you actually like!

well most people hate to read if they are made to especially in school. I don't know how to improve the way you feel over reading something you have to read. Perhaps you can start reading a subject that interests you and you can start off slow like reading a magazine. But reading is a great skill to have and it is something you need for life. For instance, if you start reading it improves your spelling skills which is lacking in your case, sorry about that.

I think you should attempt to write, at least a paragraph every day. Let it be a diary note, or a comment on some news you heard.Sign up to a writing forum on the web and start posting what you write there. Get opinions from readers and share thoughts with them.
In time you will want to know more and write better, that ought to make you read, it will make you want to widen your knowledge. And it will be fun. Sharing knowledge with others enhances your personality and wits too.
Have fun!

Try reading different kinds of books, maybe you'll find something you like - everyone has a different definition of a 'good' book. Unfortunately there's a difference between reading because you want to and reading because you have to, and the latter is difficult to enjoy.

Start looking for things that interest you, and go from there. Read about issues or topics that concern you. If that doesn't work, read "Harry Potter" and the "Catcher in the Rye." There's something very addicting about these books, and you won't want to put them down.

Read something that interests you. Don't dis magazines or graphic novels/comic books. They're a great way to start a reading habit. Get a subscription to magazine. I used to subcribe to "Oddessy" (about astronomy & space travel) when I was your age. My brother subscribed to "Outdoor Life". There is a magazine for just about every area of interest.

You need to find and read a book on a subject that you're interested in. When you read a book that is well written, your imagination will kick in and you'll be able to visualise all the scenes and characters.
Hey, you might even learn to spell proper?. prooper?. propper?.
