I'm looking for a good board or DVD game to buy for visiting family to play. I buy a new one every year at Christmas and have no idea this year. We like the dvd trivial pursuit games and stuff. Between 2-8 people will play at any time. Thanks!

For abstract strategy, I prefer the game of go to chess; easier to learn, harder to master, great handicapping system, and can be played on smaller boards if a beginner or short on time. On top of that, the same board can be used to play other games like go-moku and Pente.

As for stuff for the whole family, I like Apples to Apples. It's a card game where you try to choose a noun which best fits a given adjective. Since the nouns are limited to the cards in your hand, some hilarious answers come up. In the trivial pursuit category there is Cranium, which tests a wider variety of skills.

I also like the a lot of the games one can play with the icehouse pieces from looney labs. They have a basic game now called tree house which can get you started. For a lot of the other games, you need to get more pieces.

A lot of people seem to be talking about dvd Clue. I was not too impressed with the vhs video version I played a few years back, but everyone has their own preferences.

Vampire: Prince of the city

A board game where players take the roles of different leaders of
vampire families. The Goal of the game is to be elected prince
of the city. That happens when you have the greatest total of
prestige. During the game people fight each other over territories.
Each territory gives a different bonus. We have had great fun
with the game in our family. And not two games are the same.

I'd suggest Apples to Apples. Or, since you like trivia, one of the first and still the best general trivia game: Facts in Five. Both play well with multiple players, although with more than 5 players in Fi5 some will not get to pick a category each round, but that's a relatively minor problem unless you play with really obnoxious players.

Yes it's so cool, I can't think of anything better on a cold winters day than to play a game of monotony in front of the fire. Now strip Monopoly with clothes instead of money, that's more like it

Since you buy something different every year, try one of those murder mystery DVDs. You can find them just about at every one of those game kiosks they set up this time of year.

It will meet your participant requirement, and will add a little twist to the game tradition.

Apples to Apples is a great choice. The Deal or No Deal DVD is pretty boring.

Well, monopoly is a classic, so is life, but for this holiday season, might a recommend a deal or no deal dvd/board game, if you like that show
