Yes, there is medication for an enlarged prostate. Ask your doctor who is qualified, trained, and licensed to give medical advice. People on this site are not. Good luck.

For years saw palmetto has been used to shrink enlarged prostate glands. Unfortunately, recent research shows it to be ineffective.

Avodart is a prescription med that has been clinically tested and found to stop prostate growth...at least for a few years. If you have an enarged prostate you should start on Avodart ASAP to stop the progression of the disease.

There are several surgical interventions available. TURP is the "gold standard," but it requires a 2-3 day hospital stay and the possibility of blood transfusions. Its biggest advantage is that a pathologist can look over the shavings and spot any cancerous cells.

Several alternative procedures use heat to kill excess prostate tissue. This heat can come from microwaves or other sources.

A great new-ish alternative to TURP and the heating procedures is the GreenLight (laser PVP) procedure. Most patients who have it go home 2 or 3 hours later, without a catheter. Incontinence and impotence are rare side effects, and even retrograde ejaculation is not universal.

Learning any surgical procedure takes practice. Before agreeing to any procedure, ask the urologist point-blank how many he has done. If less than 50, thank him/her and look for another urologist.

There are medicines that are available for that, but it all boils down to the reason why the prostate is enlarged before a doctor would prescribe it to you. Is it infected, is it cancerous, ect? Your doctor can explain all that to you. Best of luck to you......
