My girl friend has been on birth control pills since a met her a couple of months ago. She told me last week that she needs to go stop taking the pill about once every 4 months so she can have a period. She said that she needs to have a period occasionally or she gets cranky and you don't want to be around her. Is this typical?

The birth control pills are hormones. If she's on regular pills that she's set to get a period every month but takes the packs successively then she's messing around a bit with her body. They make pills now where she can have only 4 periods a year. Its still regulating her hormones. Some women have very different reactions to those pills. And if a woman were to take a few packs in a row without a break for the period yes she can get cranky to be around. Or it may not affect her at all. Each woman is different.

And if you're that worried about knocking your girlfriend up since you've posted a couple various forms of this question then you either need to use a condom EVERY time which still has a 3% rate of pregnancy. Or keep it in your pants. If you can't handle being a parent you shouldn't be having sex.

NO NO NO! I am on the pill and you DON'T need to stop taking them to have your period.. there is a week's worth of "reminder pills" that act as placebos with no hormones so you can have your period. Be careful, she may be trying to get pregnant to try and trap you.

I skipped my reminder pills for 3 months so I wouldn't have a period and I didn't get cranky.. only when I took them I did.

The ONLY reason you would stop the pill is if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

She needs to go back to her doctor. She should be taking the pills for three weeks, off for one, and have a period every month.

Unless, of course, she's on that new kind of pill where you only have a period every 3 months.

Ive never in my life heard anything about taking B.C pills to have a period... Its to prevent pregnancy. If she is on pills, the only reason she would need to stop is if she wanted to get pregnant.

Is she on Seasonale? Most birth control has three weeks of active pills and one week of placebos (this is the week most women will start their periods). Seasonale is a different type of birth control that has eleven weeks of active pills followed by one week of placebos. That could explain it.

If that's not it, then I have no idea what she could be talking about.

This is normal for a few people after the pill. Ask your GP, as it may be waterweight. You can use a drug called taraxatone to lose the water weight. But everyone is different so you have to check with your GP.

it depends on the birthcontrol. Some give you fewere periods. I personally dont know of any that stop them. They just make fewer periods a year. So. I say no its not typical. and most birthcontrol make your periods regular.

um... no birth control pills should regulate your period, not take it away. as for the crankiness I call that PMS.
