What's your budget for her? Since she likes to make jewelry, maybe get her some unique jewelry, or a kit with pretty beads. I saw this on sale at Red Envelope and thought it was really cute:

You could also get her a nice pair of pajamas, and maybe throw in some slippers. I like Bed Head p.j.'s, but they can get pricey. Victoria's Secret has some p.j.'s on sale right now, too, I think.

You could also get her a CD case and put some CD's with it that she can use for class (you know, those annoying educational singalongs, hehe). That way, she can have a separate CD case to take with her that just has school stuff in it.

A nice cozy scarf/glove set is always a good bet too, (unless you live somewhere that doesn't get cold).

If she likes being crafty and making jewelry, she'd probably also like a knitting kit. http://www.amazon.com/Cup-Yarn-Knitting-Needles-Instructions/dp/B000CSPP0K

When in doubt, candles, picture frames, and gift certificates are good (but impersonal) back-up gifts.

Happy shopping!

Whenever you are not sure what to get someone, just go with what they are interested in. A book on the history of jewelry making would be great. Did you think to ask your brother for a suggestion?
