I believe that these are bolt in axles from the outside and that they are 31inches long from flange to the end of the splines.

I don't recall them making a 442 in 1984. What are we dealing with here. If it's a RWD, then you can get a rear end out of any cutlass or monte from the early 80's. Anything older will be the size of the rear ends in the larger cars like the Delta/LeSabre/Caprice. Good luck.

On most GM cars...you must remove the wheels...rear brake drums...then remove the rear cover of the rearend. Then you must remove the pin that goes through the gear housing...probably a 7/16" wrench gets this out...once you have removed this pin push in on the axle and a moon shaped clip will come off the end of the axle. remove the axle and measure it.

That's the best way to determine the actual length.
