Which do you prefer? Personally I prefer The Lord of the Rings, and I am really annoyed when Eragon fans say the book did not copy it. J.R.R. Tolkien was a literary genius. I did read Eragon, and after getting past the fact it was a rip-off ( Eragon=Aragorn?) it was a decent read. The movie sucked, though. So what do you think?

Would Paolini ever do a Silmarillion type work for Alagaesia?

Other than Eragon/Aragorn, what about Urgals/Uruk-hai?
Come on, Christopher Paolini.
When it comes to creating your own world/ writing highly successful fantasy, no one can really follow after J. R. R. Tolkien (or C.S. Lewis for that matter).
But, props to Paolini for trying. He didn't do a half-bad job with what he was given.
And I haven't seen the movie, but I'm prepared to be disappointed. I thought LOTR, both movies and books, rocked!

As far as books go, Lord of the Rings is the better one in my opinion. Eragon was good considering how old Paolini was when he started.
The LOTR movies were done really well. Most of the characters fit Tolkiens descriptions, and overall the book was followed as best as can be expected. The Eragon movie strayed away from the book in all possible ways!!! I think Arya, Brom, and Angela did not fit their characters very well. The movie, I thought, was a disgrace to Paolini. Oh well.

Lord of the Rings....hands down. I did read Eragon, and agree that it is so like to Tolkien as to be of no matter. Much like a much older series by Dennis Kiernan (the Mithgar series).
Lord of the Rings was a much deeper work than Eragon will ever be. Tolkien took the lore, lgend and myth he knew, and wove and blended it with his own particular genius into a world...one readers can connect with. Eragon is more, to me at least, of a young adult kind of book. A story of growing up. Incomplete, shallow, but entertaining.
I have heard that copying something is the most sincere form of flattery :) I know, I know...not funny, but may explain why a young author "borrowed" so much from an old Master!

Lord of the Rings all the way... I haven't read them all, but I've got a good start on them... I've gotten side-tracked by numerous other fantasy series and haven't quite gotten back to LOTR. As I said, I've read some other fantasy, and let me tell you, It's not just Tolkien that Paolini ripped off.... Ann McCaffrey (Dragon Riders of Pern), Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time), and as others have said, C.S. Lewis with Chronicles of Narnia. I believe that Paolini is an avid Robert Jordan reader and took MANY ideas from him: drawing up water from the desert, sung wood, the whole Roran and the village thing, Eragon's beloved father figure dying from an attack, Urgals are relatively similar to Trollocs, several story plots, and many other things... I read Eragon first and am now working through Robert Jordan... I've found, after reading Wheel of Time and Tolkein that the Eragon books aren't as great as I first thought.... The book was still ok but definitely not as deep as LOTR or Robert Jordan. Eragon is kinda geared towards younger readers and is a good read to anyone who hasn't read other, better literary works. =)
By the way, the reason I haven't worked through as many books and series as I've wanted to is because I'm still only 13..... So many books so little time!

You are absolutely right. Eragon a rip off of LOTR. I actually listened to it on books on CD as I am a hospice nurse and some of my patients are as far away from me as an hour and a half drive. Probably wouldn't have read the book after the first few chapters. My niece read Eragon, Eldest and LOTR (at 13 years old) right after Hurricane Katrina(we were without power for almost three weeks). We waited eagerly for the movie as we thought that it would be as good as LOTR(it could have been done much better, they left out so much of the story). We were disappointed. Tolkien, and C.S. Lewis are the masters.

LOTR hands down: books and the movies. I was extremely disappointed in Eragon, it is a rip off and not that enthralling. Eragon is more child appropriate, since they took a lot out of the movie (but even the books are more comprehensible to kids). So, I would say LOTR for anyone over 12!

i in my opinion loved the books Eragon and Eldest. i've got no longer seen the action picture, yet i concept the economic made it appear as if an instantaneous scam of LOTR. The e book's plot is analogous to famous guy or woman Wars too, yet I nonetheless think of this is a sturdy tale. interior the 2nd e book, i got here across myself in a roundabout much extra interested in Roran's element than Eragon's. i've got no longer study Tolkien's trilogy, whether I somewhat have study the Hobbit. I in basic terms could no longer carry myself to concentration on his artwork, however. like the great commencing up of the two Towers is the gang working after the hobbits that have been given captured. They run for pages on end, and notice some thing that style of looks like rocks, yet seems to be Uruk-Hai bodies, and then they are working returned. and that i in my opinion concept the Eagles dashing in to shop the day became somewhat coincidental, incredibly interior the third LOTR action picture.

I prefer LotR to Eragon, and I also can't believe that it is such a rip-off. But it was still an enjoyable book. For people who don't want such a deep and meaningful story as LotR, Eragon would probably be better...it's also not quite as detailed.
Personally, I think LotR is one of the greatest trilogies ever. It is so thought-provoking and just really a good story...Tolkien set the standard for fantasy writing with this trilogy, but the problem is that too many people try to copy him...

I prefer the book Eragon to LOTR because I has a hard time focusing on Tolkien's story. I put it down pretty early. Though I did read the Hobbit. As for movies, I haven't seen Eragon, but even if I had, I would probably vote LOTR.

I have to go with LOTR. Even the author of Eragon would say the same thing (just don't ask his publicist).
I mean come on... anyone that knows the scope of work that Tolkien put into his books knows the answer to this one.
:o)
