My 12 year old wants to go snowboarding. I don't want to go to to Big Bear or any expensive place like that.

I just want to go to a mountain with snow in California. Any ideas?

What do you mean by Big Bear? Well anyways, you can go to Tahoe, CA. It's where I go every year. I usually stay in Roseville or Reno and drive to resorts in Tahoe like Boreal which is good for beginners, Sugar Bowl, and Mt. Rose.
Tahoe is approx. a 5 hour drive away from places around San Francisco.
