These are a few years old, but very underrated and if she has not read them...Darwin's Radio and the sequel - Darwin's Children.

The are sort of Sci-fi ish. But not like aliens shooting from space or people rising from the dead.

They are also technical and come with a glossary to help explain.

I must recommend and everyone I know that has read them has enjoyed them.
