The Winter Solstice, which is the shortest day of the year is the first day of Winter. That's always around December 21 or 22.

June 1st where I live. Happy summer solstice!

In Australia the season changes are on the first of March, June, September and December, rather than on the solstices and equinoxes. I gather you guys do it differently in the northern latitudes.
